Why not come along to Current Affairs?
We are a discussion group, not a debating society. Listening is as important as talking; we do not seek to “convert” others to our point of view, but to enjoy a conversation on relatively serious matters. (However, our meetings traditionally end with newspaper cuttings selected by group members – and these are very often humorous.)
It is often surprising that members approaching a topic from opposing ends of the spectrum end up in broad agreement. Respect for other peoples' views is a great British tradition.
Our topics are announced a week or so in advance to give time for us to collect our thoughts. We discuss both social and political matters. The subjects chosen reflect the interests and concerns of our group members; we aim for variety from month to month. The person who has chosen the month’s topic will be invited to introduce it.
The next meeting is at 2.00pm on 24th February 2025 at the usual venue. Following a suggestion from the last meeting, can everyone bring along one headline from broadcast, print or online news media that is worthy of discussion. Please be prepared to give a little background information on your headline in case others have not encountered the item. Headlines can be local, national or international and can range from serious to entertaining.”
