On 12th May 2026 the newly named North East Region held the first Regional Festival of Fun, Music, and Learning at Ushaw Historic House, Chapels & Gardens. It was very well-organised with a choice of about eight options per hour all day.
It was an early start with registration from 8.30 but the process was well-prepared and there was rarely much of a queue. There were multiple people from the Regional Events team manning the desk, ticking names off the register, and handing out prepared packs containing copies of the programme for the day, a map of the site, a name badge to wear, plus paper and pen to use if required. It was clear that much thought and work had gone into this. The choice of activities and timings had also been well-planned. Cecilia and the Events team deserve a round of applause as the entire day ran smoothly.
Tea or coffee followed registration. Cecilia then covered housekeeping and gave us some more information about the day before Iain Cassidy, CEO of the Third Age Trust, welcomed us to the event, explained how TAT integrates with the regions, and wished us an enjoyable day.
There were tours of the house, bird-watching, wildflower rambles, and more outdoor activities. There was indoor exercise such as Tai-Chi and Line Dancing. There were practical sessions such as flower photography or how to make a willow bird feeder. Lots of talks such as local history, volcanoes in the Cheviots, genealogy, hieroglyphics, AI, the Bayeaux Tapestry, and more. There was even a quiz.

Throughout the day there were two music sessions running concurrently in the concert hall or Chapel with folk, jazz, rock, a choir, and classical on offer.
This photo is of the Singing for Pleasure group from Durham & District u3a that is run by Mike (on guitar). This was the last session of the day in the concert hall and audience participation was welcome. Many of us joined in the group sing-song and this was a lovely end to the day.
There were at least six members from Bishop Auckland u3a at the festival plus, of course, our very own String Band performing a set in the afternoon.
All in all a great day out. Below you will find a selection of photos from the day.
