We travelled by coach to Vindolanda Fort and Museum, which is just to the south of Hadrian’s Wall. At one time, around 5000 people lived there so it covers a huge area. We joined a public tour of the site, this gave us an understanding of the buildings and people who lived and worked at Vindolanda. Archaeological excavations are ongoing, between April and September, so were able to observe their work and talk to the archaeologists. A steep path took us to the café and the excellent museum. A highlight being The Vindolanda Tablets, postcards from the past, allowing a rare insight into the lives of the people living there nearly 2000 years ago.
