On 13th August on a very hot day, even hotter than the day before, it was a little ‘testing’ for some of us. However, we were again fortunate to get a first-rate guide called Clive, who was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
We started in the south-facing Walled Garden, which dates from the 17th century, a pioneer for such gardens in England. It is sloping (not tiered), with quite big temperature differences in its various parts. Then came the Bowling Green (and no, they don’t play bowls on it), whose use has changed over the centuries, latterly being for general entertainment and reflection. It contains a rare tree, which I don’t think any of us had heard of. Our final main garden was the Faith Garden, on the site of a 13th century chapel demolished in the Civil War. The young trees planted there should eventually provide an attractive canopy of dappled shade. All in all, another two hours well spent.
