Guided visits to the Oriental Museum, Durham University

A guided visit to the Oriental Museum was set up for May 2023 but proved to be so popular that a second date had to be arranged

The Oriental Museum was founded in 1960 to support the work of the School of Oriental Studies in its work to study the art and culture of the Eastern Hemisphere. Over the intervening decades the collection and its reputation have become internationally renowned. The Museum outgrew its original home in a Victorian villa which was given a major extension in the 1970’s. Although externally bland, internally it has a muti-level open space under a spacedeck roof where all of the display areas can be perceived at once. Visitor numbers are limited to 15 per group so two visits were arranged to accommodate all of our members who wished to attend. Each group was given a curator led tour of the Chinese and Egyptian sections, where the mummy of a female courtier created great interest. After a short break we assembled in a class room where we were able to handle Japanese metalwork and ceramics.
