The weather forcast for the 11th September was uncertain, and proved to be accurate, because we had blue skies and sunshine, heavy rain and some light rain showers at different times during the walk. All the options in the space of the time it took us to do our 7 mile walk.
We set off from Etherley Church along the lane which led us onto the Etherley Incline enjoying clear skies and beautiful views. By the time we got to East Park via Phoenix Row it was pouring. Thankfully it cleared and as we decended to join part of the Weardale Way the views were magnificent. The Weardale Way led us to the entrance to Paradise and then wandered off to Escomb while we went in the opposite direction. We had a lovely meander around Paradise and enjoyed our picnic at a place by the river which has a sandy beach. The sand was wet but there were large rocks to provide seating. Paradise was looking good; nature has done an excellent job restoring beauty to an area once spoiled by pollution. On our return journey we paid respects to the Bradford brothers at the Memorial in Witton Park. What a sad but glorious story. One war, four brothers, two Victoria Crosses and three out of the four who served killed.
The rest of the walk was uphill all the way home so we were glad to get back to our starting point at the Church, a bit muddy but not too wet.
