After several attempts we finally made it to the Settle/Carlisle Railway and the Ribblehead Viaduct. We travelled by coach to Kirby Stephen railway station and by the time we arrived it was raining heavily. There had been a serious derailment up near Carlisle overnight and the train timetables on the route were being affected. We dodged the rain and the train to Ribblehead was not too long delayed. The views were dim due to the mist and rain but we were aware of crossing the viaduct.
It was still pouring with rain when we arrived and it was a wet walk to the pub for a comfort stop where, it has to be said, some members remained in the warmth of the building until it was time for the return train. Others ventured out onto the path leading to the viaduct and walked for varying distances with some actually making it to the base of the viaduct and back again.
The return to Kirkby Stephen was a little delayed and it was still raining when we boarded the coach but the sun came out on the way home!
There are a few hazy photos of our visit below. When you click on one it will enlarge for you.
