Group membership is open to any u3a member with an interest in photography. This could be on any type of camera. The idea is to improve one's expertise through interaction discussions, with other members and possible talks by experts.

In 2023 we had outings to the Bowlees area of Teesdale, The Himalayan Gardens near Ripon, Durham City and a joint visit with the SET group to Beamish museum.

News from the Photography group

Here are some photos from recent 2023 projects and field trips.

  • Black and White

    At our meeting on 20th March 2025 members were invited to present photographs in black and white.

    Continuing the group's winter programme of indoor meetings, each with a given theme determined by members, our December meeting concentrated on pictures based around the theme of 'Arches'

    With the onset of shorter days and less reliable weather the group's activities are now restricted to indoor meetings at which members bring 10 to 20 images on a particular theme, the images can be taken on individual expeditions on days which permit exterior work or drawn from each member's library of photographs taken in…

  • Saltburn - A Day at the Seaside

    On Thursday 20th June, 2024 the group made an excursion by train to the North Yorkshire coast at Saltburn. The weather was perfect for a day of taking pictures by the sea.

  • Thorpe Perrow

    On Thursday 16th May, 2024 The group visited the Arboretum at Thorpe Perrow, near Bedale in North Yorkshire.

  • Still Life

    In November the group met to have some fun using a light box to display small objects and items, and experimented with a static display using flash guns or integrated flash on our cameras. Author and Pictures - John S

  • Beamish museum

    A joint visit with the SET group. The photographic purpose of the visit is to take pictures of old architecture, machinery etc using the camera manual mode. Author and Pictures -John S

  • The Himalayan Gardens

    The garden showcases Himalayan plants because of the natural acid soil, springs and microclimate in North Yorkshire.   • Bowlees, Gibsons Cave and Low Force

    On a damp cold day in March, nine hardy photographers went up into Upper Teesdale to use their cameras on manual mode photographing water.
