Note that you need to be a member of Bishop Auckland & District u3a in order to take part in any of these study and interest groups.
What groups are available?
Bishop Auckland & District u3a has more than 25 groups available covering a range of activities. The list is below, alphabetically, by category, by day, or by venue. You can see some of our groups in action on these photos.
How do I join a group?
The fastest and easiest way is to visit that group's web page (below) and send a message to the Group Leader via the group email address.
How much does it cost?
You annual u3a subscription gives you access to all groups. Each group is different. Some activities are free, some share costs such as room hire or refreshments, and some activities such as a visit to a local museum or a coach outing are at cost.
All Group Leaders (and Committee members) are volunteers and more are always welcome. We encourage all groups to have at least one Leader but this is especially recommended for our larger groups and some have 3, 4 or more members working as a team. If you can spare a little time and would like to know more about how you can take part then please contact the Group Leader of the group that interests you or the Groups Coordinator on the Committee from the Contacts page.
Please note that whilst some interest groups are free others levy a small charge to cover the hire of meeting rooms and/or speakers. Events that require transport or where there is an entrance fee are paid by the member as well as personal expenditure such as refreshments. Please take a look at our groups pages for more information about them. There is a contact link on each page so you can message the group leader.
New u3a members can attend up to two group sessions to try out the group before joining the group but this is at the discretion of the Group Leader.
Reminder to members that putting your name down for any chargeable event or activity is a commitment to pay for it.
How can I start a new group?
Groups are run for the members by the members; we are all volunteers. Groups can be run by one person, by a group of friends, or by a team. u3a is about sharing and members are encouraged to take an active part in the running of their respective groups where possible. You don't have to be an expert, just an enthusiastic member. If you have an interest that you would like to share with others, even just two or three others, then it's easy to start a new group. Talk to our Groups Coordinator (see Contacts page) and view Group Leader documents on the Members page for details.
